Don't fall for the £599 tag: The iPhone 17e is secretly a £100 discount in a year of price hikes

Think the iPhone 17e is just a minor spec bump? Think again. By doubling the storage and adding the flagship A19 chip, Apple has quietly turned its most affordable phone into one of its most dangerous competitors.

Apple’s Monday morning launch of the iPhone 17e initially seemed like business as usual: a familiar design, a 6.1-inch display, and a £599 starting price. However, as the dust settles on the announcement, it’s becoming clear that Apple has actually snuck in a price cut that makes this the most aggressive value play in the company’s history.

Pre-order and availability

The iPhone 17e will be available in Black, White, and the all-new Soft Pink.

Pre-orders open:

  • Wednesday, March 4 at 6:15 a.m. PT / 2:15 p.m. GMT.
  • In-store availability: Wednesday, March 11.

The math of value: 256GB is the new baseline

The headline story isn't the price, it’s the storage. In an era where 128GB has become the frustrating standard for entry-level devices, Apple has doubled the base capacity to 256GB while maintaining the £599 starting price.

This move stands in stark contrast to Samsung’s recent strategy with the Galaxy S26 series. When Samsung unveiled the S26 last month, it also officially "ditched" the 128GB tier. However, unlike Apple, Samsung used the transition to justify a £80 price hike, pushing the base Galaxy S26 up to £879 from £799 the previous year.

By keeping the iPhone 17e at £599, Apple is effectively handing out a £100 discount compared to last year’s 16e upgrade path, while simultaneously undercutting Samsung's entry-level flagship by £300. In a year when global component costs for RAM and NAND flash have spiked due to the AI memory demand, this move is a significant pivot towards market share over pure profit margins. Apple isn't just matching the industry standard; it's weaponising value to lure buyers.

iPhone 17e vs. iPhone 16e: What’s actually new?

While the chassis remains the aluminium "notched" design we know from the iPhone 14, the internals are a different beast entirely.

The Pro standard: A19 and the C1X Modem

The 17e is powered by the A19 chip, the same silicon found in the flagship iPhone 17 (albeit with a binned 4-core GPU). This isn't just about speed; it's about Apple Intelligence. With 8GB of RAM as standard, the 17e handles native Visual Intelligence and Live Translation without breaking a sweat.

Connectivity also gets a massive boost via the Apple-designed C1X modem. Early technical data suggests it is 30% more energy efficient than the modems found in the iPhone 16 Pro, contributing to the 17e's impressive 26-hour video playback rating.

MagSafe is here

For many, the biggest "finally" moment of the iPhone 17e launch was the inclusion of MagSafe. By adding the magnetic ring to the "e" series, Apple has unified its entire ecosystem. This isn't just for charging; it opens up a world of wallets, car mounts and Continuity Camera accessories that were previously out of reach for budget buyers.
