“The year of smartphones on Ozempic” Ernest Doku, Uswitch mobiles expert, comments on the launch of Apple’s iPhone 17 range:

“It seems 2025 is the year of smartphones on Ozempic, with a raft of superslim phones launched this summer. Now, Apple has now followed suit with the announcement of its ultrathin iPhone Air.

“The slimmed-down device, measuring approx. 5.6mm, makes this the thinnest iPhone ever made - significantly thinner than iPhone 16’s 7.8mm profile, and pips Samsung at the post with a frame 0.2mm slimmer than the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge.

“With Apple’s outsized influence over tech trends, this could be the tipping point where we see mainstream adoption of ultra-thin devices with this refined, firmly premium effort.

“The Air is eSIM only, a smartphone first for the UK. This new update could mark the start of Brits moving towards widespread adoption of these ‘embedded SIMs’, and signal the beginning of the end for needing to swap out physical SIM cards when switching networks.

“Across the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro models, along with an all-new design, users see upgrades to the rear and front cameras, larger displays, faster charging and upgraded connectivity with Wi-Fi 7 support - all key selling points for consumers crying out for a leap forward from Apple.

“At prices from £799, £999 and £1,099, topping out at almost £2,000 for the highest spec model, these phones aren’t cheap, but it’s safe to say Apple has brought a raft of exciting - and much-needed - updates to the table.

“If you are keen to get your hands on one of the new iPhones, it’s worth holding off. Previous trends have shown deals for the iPhone 17 itself will likely get stronger a few weeks after its launch

“If you’re keen to upgrade but don’t need the very latest model, a refurbished iPhone is a smart alternative. You’ll get a high-quality device at a lower cost, while also making a more sustainable choice. Prices for the 16 and 15 will also drop, which is worth considering if you don’t need the latest tech.”
