Spooky season is upon us - Google searches for Halloween are up by 300%[1], as more than half (55%)[2] the nation plans to celebrate Halloween this year. Amidst all the scaries, a glitchy broadband connection shouldn’t be one of them.

Uswitch.com broadband expert, Max Beckett, comments: “Broadband speeds can be impaired during the Halloween season for a variety of reasons - from network interference and outdated software to old wiring.”

As the nation lights up their homes and gardens with decorations, host parties, and stream themed events, our networks can often become spotty. Taking a few simple steps to ward off Wi-Fi woes can help keep the connection running smoothly, no tricks, just treats.

Max Beckett unpacks his six top tips for keeping broadband fast and fright-free this Halloween:

1) Decor disruption

Halloween kicks off the most decorative time of year - but while creativity runs wild, your spooky setup might be haunting your Wi-Fi. Giant skeletons, inflatable ghosts, and other large decorations don’t just deliver the scares, they can block your router’s Wi-Fi signal. Spooky mirrors and reflective décor can also interfere with the router’s electromagnetic field. To keep the connection alive, place your router away from thick walls, metallic décor, and bulky furniture.

2) Old wiring woes

Decorative lights with poor insulation can cause interference, especially if they’re plugged in near your router. Many routers and LED lights use the same wireless frequency, creating a jumble of signals. Using shielded ethernet cables for your router can help block interference and keep your connection steady.

3) Minimise interference

Electrical devices like smart decorations, lamps, TVs, and fairy lights can all meddle with your Wi-Fi. Keep them clear from your router to avoid unwanted slowdowns - no one wants their stream to vanish into thin air.

4) Boost your signal

If spooky décor is slowing down your broadband and getting in the way of your scary movie marathon, a Wi-Fi booster or mesh network system can extend coverage throughout your home. They’re also great for connecting and controlling smart decorations or devices without a frightful lag.

5) Update your devices

Don’t ghost your updates! Software upgrades often include performance improvements that boost connectivity. Make sure all your devices are running the latest versions to keep your network in top shape.

6) Test your speed

Check your internet speed to ensure you’re getting what you pay for. If your provider guarantees a minimum speed and you’re not hitting it, they have 30 days to fix the issue  or you can switch providers without early termination fees. Speed-testing apps can also help you spot Wi-Fi dead zones and find the best router placement.
