- Nearly three quarters (72%) of Brits feel priced out of buying the latest smartphones[1]
- Data shows that waiting a few weeks after a new iPhone is released could save you more than £75 on your contract[3]
- 60% would consider refurbished devices[2], which can be significantly cheaper, but misconceptions are still holding many back
- Uswitch mobiles expert, Simrat Sharma, shares tips to help you save on a new iPhone, from timing your purchase to exploring refurbished and older models
As Apple unveils its latest iPhone 17 models, nearly three quarters (72%) of people say they feel priced out of buying the latest smartphone[1], according to research from Uswitch.com, the comparison and switching service.
This follows the announcement of Apple’s most expensive iPhone to date, at £1,999 for the iPhone 17 Pro Max model with 2TB of storage.
Sentiment towards phone launches has changed, as over half of Brits (54%) say they used to be excited about upgrades, but their financial priorities have now shifted,[4] while 59% claim the changes between models aren’t noticeable[5].
The days of upgrading every year or two are behind us, as the average Brit gets a new phone every three years, and as many as three in five (59%) say they feel ripped off by annual phone upgrades[6].
With many Brits continuing to feel the pinch, refurbished phones are a popular alternative, with six in 10 (60%) saying they have already purchased one or would consider doing so[3].
Simrat Sharma, Uswitch mobiles expert comments: “The launch of a new iPhone can make you consider whether you should upgrade your device, but for many, the latest devices are simply too expensive.
“The good news is, if you're looking for a new smartphone, whether it’s the latest iPhone 17 or a previous model, there are plenty of smart ways to save, whether that’s by waiting a few weeks after the launch for better pricing, or opting for a refurbished model.
Simrat Sharmat shares her top tips for Brits looking to upgrade their handsets:
- Wait a little longer: If you do want one of the new iPhone 17s or the iPhone Air, it’s worth holding off for a few weeks as data has shown prices typically drop a few weeks after launch. For example, following the iPhone 16 release last year, customers who waited 24 days would have saved £77.48 across a year. Better deals may also become available during Black Friday.
- Consider older models: As consumers feel less noticeable differences between previous models, an older handset may be more suited to your needs. With Apple Intelligence available on iPhone 16 devices onwards, you can benefit from most of the latest AI features without purchasing the latest model. Data also shows that previous models typically see a price cut following the launch of a new model.
- Check out a refurbished phone: Refurbished phones can be significantly cheaper than buying a brand new device. You can currently get a “pristine” iPhone 16 for £672, which is £127 cheaper than the iPhone17. If you’re open to a slightly older model, a refurbished iPhone 15 in mint condition costs £520.79.”
- Trade in your old handset: Don't just get rid of your old phone or leave it lying around the house. Trading it in is one of the smartest ways to get money off your new handset. The value of your old device can help you save on your upfront cost or reduce your monthly payments and you could get up to £300 for trading in your old iPhone.
