There are Champagne Problems and then there are phone battery problems.

As the UK leg of the Taylor Swift Eras Tour kicks off this weekend at Edinburgh's Murrayfield stadium - four in ten (39%) music fans say they’re worried about running out of battery at live music events[1].

With each concert expected to be 3 hours 15 minutes long, Uswitch.com mobiles expert and ‘Mastermind’ Simrat Sharma shares her top tips to make sure your phone is Ready For It - with a battery that isn’t Down Bad before the night ends.

Long Live your phone battery: turn on Low Battery Mode

Your phone’s ‘low battery mode’ might dim the screen, put the phone in black-and-white mode, and reduce or restrict what you can do with it. But in many cases, it will double the battery life - so you’ll be ready to capture all the iconic moments, from crossing the first bridge of the evening to the last.

Don’t let it get Down Bad: kill any apps running in the background

What really drains the battery is the apps your phone uses. And, more specifically, it’s the permissions these apps require in order to give you the best possible experience. This can be anything from accessing your camera, calendar or contacts to using your location or Wi-Fi. Be sure to close any unnecessary background apps.

And Your Location, You Forgot to Turn it Off: turn off GPS

Don’t fall into the trap of Taylor’s ex in the Black Dog - remember to turn your location off. Your GPS is what most map apps use to find your location, but unfortunately, it's another battery drainer. Unless you're actively using Google Maps, Citymapper, Foursquare, or another location-based app, turn off your GPS – you won't notice any difference to your phone's functionality.

You Belong With Me: buying a portable charger will give you a second life

A battery pack is a great addition when packing for music events. For around £20, you can get your hands on a 20,000mAh power bank with more than enough juice to charge a smartphone multiple times. For context, the iPhone 14 Pro battery is approximately 3,200mAh. Shake It Off: switch the vibration off

It might be less noticeable when a call or message comes in, but the vibration function on your phone actually uses more battery than standard ringtones, so switch (or shake) it off and keep your phone on silent.

If you can Tolerate It: keep your screen brightness down

Your screen uses the most power of all - so if you can Tolerate It, keep the brightness as low as possible to avoid the Delicate situation of having less than 10% battery to get home. Find out more at Uswitch.com’s guide page on making phone batteries last longer.
