Uswitch mobiles expert, Ru Bhikha, comments:

“This year’s Unpacked event contained four new devices, but the hype is around the foldables. Specifically, the hardware changes to the Galaxy Z Flip 5 - including a fuller front display - have vastly improved the phone from its predecessor. These handsets are decidedly premium, so it’s great to see Samsung’s designers delivering some practical improvements with the latest iteration.

“The Galaxy Z Fold 5 also received a few welcome improvements to its design, such as a waterdrop hinge that aims to minimise the visible crease on the screen, as well as a slimmer 13.4mm chassis.

“While the software and cameras may not have received major updates this time around, it's clear that Samsung is playing it smart with their pricing strategy. Launch prices have either reduced, or held steady with each iteration - and while they’re still a long way off being called affordable, consumers are getting better quality devices for a little less each year.

“Also, despite potential supply challenges affecting the extent of these price decreases, the Galaxy Flip does offer a lower-cost option compared to competitor foldables, such as Google's Pixel Fold.

“Foldables and flip phones aside, the Galaxy Watch also received an upgrade this year with the Galaxy Watch 6 series. Features range from the practical - including playing nicely with the Flip and Fold for remote use and the much requested WhatsApp support - to the cool but slightly gimmicky, such as a temperature sensor for measuring nearby objects. Nonetheless, great to see Samsung adding functionality and delivering more value for these high ticket tech items.”
