Justina Miltienyte, policy expert at Uswitch.com, said: “Bringing full fibre to the whole of the country is a challenging project, and the vast majority of the UK’s nearly six million full fibre connections have been installed in urban areas[1].

"This is a welcome announcement from Openreach and shows that Government subsidies will be targeted at the hardest-to-reach parts of the country.

“Ofcom research revealed last month that the speed divide between rural and urban areas is also narrowing, with more than half of rural households now able to access superfast speeds of over 30Mbps.

“Many households who are still on ADSL connections and enduring slow speeds are unaware that they could upgrade to fibre broadband and save themselves money.

“Anyone who is still battling with slow broadband should take a speed test to find out how reliable the connection really is. If you’re not happy with the results, do a comparison online and see if you can get a better deal and a faster service.”
