Mobile phone customers, who are happy with their current handsets, could save over £300 on their bill each year, simply by switching their expiring contracts to a SIM-only deal, according to new research by Uswitch.com, the comparison and switching service[1].

With 98% of mobile phone contracts running for two years[3], any consumers who purchased a new phone in February 2019, could be in line for a significant saving this March. Comparing two of the most popular mobile phone contracts from two years ago - the iPhone XR, and the Samsung Galaxy-S9[2], smartphone users with either of those handsets could save over £20 per month by switching to a SIM-only deal.

iPhone XR

Consumers who purchased an iPhone XR (30GB data) on a 24 month deal in February 2019, costing an average of £966 (or £40 per month)[1], could save £360 a year by switching to a SIM-only deal with an equivalent data allowance. SIM-only provider, Smarty, for instance offers 30GB data for £10 per month[5].

Samsung Galaxy-S9

Consumers who purchased a Samsung Galaxy S9 (17GB Data) on a 24 month deal in 2019, costing an average of £719 (or £29 per month)[4], could also net a significant saving by switching to a SIM-only contract. Smarty’s 30GB data deal for £10 per month[5], would save them £228 over the next 12 months (or £19 per month), as well as gain them an extra 13GB of data each month.

In both cases, they would get to keep the same high-quality phone, and reduce their monthly bill significantly.

Switchers would also be able to keep their existing phone number. By using ‘Text to Switch’, providers are obliged to get in touch within a few minutes and their reply will include all the information required to switch.

Ru Bhikha, mobiles expert at Uswitch.com comments: “The end of a mobile contract signals a decision crossroads for most phone users. You can either upgrade to a newer model with increased functionality, or switch to a SIM-only deal and rake in a major discount.

“If you’re happy with your handset when your existing deal comes to an end, check out your data usage and shop around for a SIM-only contract which offers you the appropriate package. Don’t forget to factor in that you may be using less data during lockdown. You could end up saving hundreds of pounds.”

Notes to Editors
1.The £300 saving figure is based on the difference between the average iPhone XR (34.5GB data) 24 month contract in 2019 (one of the most popular phones of the time), which cost  £966 over 2 years (or £40.45 per month) compared to the listed Smarty deal (£10 for 30GB) with equivalent data allowance. All mobile deals referenced are effective monthly costs rather than actual, given a number of deals do have an upfront cost.
2.The iPhone XR and Samsung Galaxy S9 were the bestselling phones in February 2019, according to Uswitch data. The term ‘winners’ refers to the saving sum from a 24 month average iPhone XR and Samsung Galaxy S9, compared with the average one SIM-only deal.
3. 97.8% of all deals on Uswitch’s website were 24 month contract deals in February 2019.
4.The average Samsung Galaxy S9 (17.4GB) costs £719.28 (or £29.97 per month). All deals referenced are effective monthly costs rather than actual, given a number of deals do have an upfront cost.
5. £10 per month with Smarty would cost £240 over 2 years.
