Commenting on the news that Gnergy has not met the final demand to pay its renewable energy subsidies and faces enforcement action by Ofgem, Uswitch.com energy expert Rik Smith said:
“This doesn’t look promising for Gnergy or their customers, and the company could become the second to have their licence revoked for not paying their renewable obligations.
“They were one of four suppliers who were given a final warning last autumn to pay their outstanding renewable energy subsidies. One of those suppliers, Toto, has since gone bust, while another, Robin Hood Energy, has had to borrow money from its owner, Nottingham Council.
“The Renewables Obligation is an important way of supporting green electricity generation in the UK, but suppliers not paying the money they owe is becoming an annual event, and smaller energy companies in particular seem to have trouble with it.”
Commenting on Ofgem’s announcement that it will investigate whether Utilita charged some of its prepayment meter customers more than the price cap allows, Uswitch.com energy expert Rik Smith said:
“It’s concerning that Ofgem feel the need to open this investigation. It’s important that customers are treated fairly by their supplier, in compliance with the rules.”
