Commenting on the news that renewable energy supplier Solarplicity has ceased trading, Sarah Broomfield, energy expert at Uswitch.com, said:

“It’s unfortunately ironic that a supplier set up to provide 100% renewable electricity had trouble paying subsidies to the people who generated that electricity. Customer service failings led to it being banned in February from taking on any new customers, which also damaged consumer confidence in the supplier.

“But the writing seems to have been on the wall since Solarplicity was handed a winding up order last month, and the company then transferred 43,000 of its customers to TOTO Energy.

“Today’s announcement only affects the 7,500 households who remained with Solarplicity. Ofgem’s safety net means their gas and electricity supplies will continue as normal, while any credit balances will also be protected.

“Those households should sit tight and wait for Ofgem to appoint another supplier. Once the new energy company contacts them, customers affected will be free to shop around for a new deal if they think they may find better prices and customer service from other providers.”
