Richard Neudegg, head of regulation at Uswitch.com, says: “Providing the regulators with greater fining powers would strengthen consumer law across all industries, and fire a warning shot across the bows of companies who try to bamboozle their customers. As ever, the devil will be in the detail when it comes to how this will actually benefit consumers.

“In telecoms the work Ofcom is doing on consumer fairness and tackling the ‘cost of confusion’ is already making good progress. The watchdog’s work on mobile handsets is important and sets out to resolve these complex issues, so it must be allowed to complete its efforts. The last thing all parties want is a fix which sets out to resolve one problem but unintentionally creates several others such as raising prices significantly for hard-pressed consumers.”
