Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com, says: “Google’s launch of Stadia, hot on the heels of Microsoft and Sony announcing their partnership in a cloud-based system, is the clearest indication yet that the future of video gaming is online and it could do for games what Netflix did for content.

“Crucially, this means gamers will no longer need expensive hardware to process the in-play performance. They will only require a fast and reliable broadband connection to stream the full gaming experience and interact with fellow players.

“Our recent research revealed how three-quarters of gaming households currently report their broadband is not up to scratch, a number that is only likely to rise as these online services come to dominate the market.

“While this represents an exciting development for keen gamers, those who attempt to stream games in 4K resolution at 60fps will be in for a shock if theirs is a lacklustre connection – although a 10Mbps connection will suffice for lower definition gaming.

“Importantly this will affect not only those compete with others in online gameplay but even solo gamers who will be streaming their games rather than playing offline – placing a continual premium on bandwidth.

“So, while gaming households may save money on the hardware side of things, it is their broadband that will ultimately determine the quality of their gaming experience.

“The positive news for those who may need to upgrade their broadband is that Google has priced Stadia very reasonably, with a good value subscription offering keen gamers access to a growing library of games.

“Ultimately, it is an exciting time to have every consumer with the potential to play games at the highest quality with such a low barrier to entry.”
