Following the news that the ASA has upheld a compliant on Sky over misleading broadband claims, Dani Warner, broadband and TV expert at Uswitch.com, says:

“Broadband providers are no longer allowed to make exaggerated claims about potential speeds following the ASA’s major clampdown at the end of 2017 so they have had to become more imaginative in how they stand out from the pack with their advertising.

“Unfortunately for Sky, its promise of a strong Wi-Fi signal all over your house has been shown to be misleading, and while it is by no means unique in falling foul of the ASA, it will be stung by this ruling the regulator has upheld against it.

“There are many reasons why fast broadband speeds may not be available all over a property, from the structure of the building to the location of the router, so it is unsurprising that Sky’s claim was successfully challenged by its competitors.

“Fortunately, the power is in the hands of the consumers. Running an online speed test at various points around your home will allow you to see how fast your internet is, and if it is lagging in certain areas, there are measures you can take – such as investing in Wi-Fi boosters to spread the signal throughout your property or even simply moving your router.

“It will also enable you to assess better the alternatives – which may even allow you to save money while upgrading. As of 1 March, customers have even more power – any reported speed issues that are not resolved within 30 days will give people the freedom to quit their existing broadband contract free of charge.

“There are always alternatives, especially if you feel like you have been misled, but it is important to be aware of what you think you have been sold compared with what you are actually getting by checking speeds regularly and contacting your provider when they fall short.”
