Commenting on Ofcom’s pricing trends data for telecoms services, Richard Neudegg, Head of Regulation at Uswitch.com, says: “Today‘s report from Ofcom indicates that the gap between the price of entry level superfast services and ‘standard’ broadband services has narrowed over the past year, which gives a real opportunity to the four million out-of-contract customers still languishing on slower, less reliable ADSL services.
“The simple truth is that many customers currently on less reliable and increasingly outdated standard broadband services, that are out-of contract, could be paying less for quicker and more reliable broadband.
“With these superfast services now available to around 95% of the country, there’s clearly a mismatch between availability and uptake – and awareness has a large part to play here.
“There are also 1.5 million mobile customers who are in a similar situation as the initial term of their handset and tariff contract has ended and they are now effectively continuing to pay for a phone that’s already paid off.
“This report brings into sharp focus the need to arm consumers with the information to get services better suited to their needs.
“Ofcom’s planned consultation on implementing notifications for when contracts are about to end is an important step. If executed effectively, this will give telecoms customers the facts they need to take advantage of what’s available in the market, and would bring the rules into line with what’s expected in other sectors.”
Uswitch’s Connectivity without Complexity campaign has been looking at these key issues and exploring their impact on consumers. We believe it’s time the industry gave the facts – being open and upfront with the information that matters, removed the needless hoops that consumers are made to jump through and worked to ensure the road to faster, more reliable connectivity is a journey for all.
