Commenting on today’s announcement from Ofgem that it will require energy suppliers to take part in trials to reach disengaged customers, Richard Neudegg, Head of Regulation at Uswitch.com, says: “It is a welcome step to see Ofgem making progress by implementing this CMA recommendation. It will be critical for the success of the CMA’s remedies that suppliers make every effort to help their customers engage with the market.
“All too often, loyal energy customers are left languishing on expensive standard variable tariffs, collectively overpaying by a staggering £3.6 billion per year when compared to the cheapest deal available on the market. These trials are a good starting point to encourage more households to seek a better deal.
“Competition is key to making the market work for consumers – lowering bills and improving service. The CMA spent two years closely examining the energy market and now the onus is on the industry, Ofgem and Government to continue to implement the CMA’s full package of remedies and give them the proper chance to succeed.”
