Commenting on today’s launch of Tesco Mobile’s roaming proposition, called ‘Home From Home’, Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com, says: “It was only a matter of time before more mobile operators followed in Three and iD’s footsteps to improve their roaming propositions and slash prices for using handsets abroad.

“Hats off to Tesco Mobile, which has even beaten the European Commission to ensure roaming costs no extra for Brits across the entire EU, as well as the EEA.

“Given that more than a quarter (27%) of Brits incorrectly believe it costs no extra to use a mobile when travelling in the EU, people are still vulnerable to bill shock until the European Commission abolishes EU roaming completely in June 2017.

“It’s telling that it’s not the major networks but two mobile virtual network operators – Tesco and iD Mobile with its TakeAway plan that covers 29 countries – that are currently leading the market with their roaming propositions. Tesco Mobile piggybacks off O2’s network, so if it can offer free roaming in 31 countries, it makes you wonder why O2 doesn’t.

“One word of caution. Customers must be careful they don’t get caught out by this time limited offer which only stands until September 3rd. We hope Tesco Mobile will be communicating this properly to customers via both text and email to ensure there’s no confusion.”
