British Gas and EDF Energy cut standard gas prices, both knocking £31 off average gas bills
British Gas drop effective from 16th March, while EDF Energy’s cut comes in on 24th March
British Gas is the only major provider to cut gas prices three times since the start of last year
But despite a 23% drop in the cost of wholesale electricity last year, big six customers are yet to see a single reduction to standard electricity tariffs
Today’s British Gas and EDF Energy cuts will only lower their average dual fuel (gas and electricity) bill by 3%
Uswitch.com repeats call for standard dual fuel tariff cuts from the big six of at least 10% – around £120 – more in line with low wholesale energy prices.
British Gas and EDF Energy have this morning both announced cuts to their standard gas prices of 5.1% and 5% respectively, reducing average bills by £31. Commenting on the news, Uswitch.com Director of Consumer Policy, Ann Robinson, says: “By being the first big six supplier to make three cuts to standard gas prices, British Gas is again leading by example.
“But while these reductions are welcome, they should go even further. Wholesale electricity prices fell 23% last year so it’s deeply disappointing that all the major suppliers are still refusing to reduce standard electric tariffs. Many British homes are electricity only and desperately need more help to keep warm this winter.
“In the meantime, standard tariff customers should make their own price cut by switching to a cheaper fixed deal to save an average of £325 a year.”
