The price of the cheapest energy tariff continues to plummet in what marks the start of a winter price war between suppliers, according to Uswitch.com, the independent price comparison and switching service.
E.ON has today reduced the price of its latest fixed term tariff – launched on Wednesday to coincide with a 5.1% cut to standard gas prices – by £14 to reclaim top spot in the best buy tables. Its newest deal has now undercut rivals SSE and Extra Energy, who both launched market-leading deals in the past 48 hours.
E.ON’s ‘Energy Fixed 1 Year v19’, priced at just £769 based on average energy use, is the cheapest tariff on the market for almost five years. The new plan will be £288 a year cheaper than the supplier’s standard variable tariff after its gas price cut takes effect on 1st February.
Tom Lyon, energy expert at Uswitch.com, says: “It looks as though a winter price war is well underway as suppliers battle it out to rule the roost in the best buy tables. But, while the price of fixed deals is plunging, the cost of standard tariffs continues to fall like a feather.
“If you’re one of the 70% of consumers paying over the odds for energy by languishing on the most expensive tariffs, you shouldn’t wait for token-gesture cuts to standard plans from suppliers. Instead, shop around and switch to one of the new competitive fixed deals, which can be £325 a year cheaper than the average big six standard tariff.”
