Google’s launch event saw the unveiling of two new mobile phones – the Nexus 5X and 6P. Rob Kerr, mobile expert at Uswitch.com, comments: “Google’s twin phone release has seen the search giant team up with two affordable and well-regarded mobile makers meaning it can muscle up to the likes of the OnePlus 2 and Motorola’s new Moto G and X phones.
“The trouble with chasing the middle tier smartphone market is that it’s now populated with affordable, high-spec devices – and these new phones are simply solid, middle of the road phones.
“The most attractive feature is the 6P’s impressive spec sheet. Google is offering high end, iPhone 6s-worthy specs, but at a fraction of the cost.
“But with limited stand out features, other than a well-located fingerprint sensor, Google needs to up its game or the Nexus 5X and 6P will end up with a similar fate to Amazon’s Fire Phone. That was a lesson learned the hard way that not even a world-recognised brand can carry a mobile to success if it’s not worthy.”
