Commenting on today’s announcement that TalkTalk is launching Britain’s lowest-priced unlimited mobile SIM-only plan for its TV and broadband customers, Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com, says: “On the heels of major launches in the SIM-only space from both BT and Carphone Warehouse, TalkTalk’s deal seems set to make this corner of the market – acutely driven by value for money – even more combative.
“Combining the freedom of a 30-day rolling contract with an unlimited data allowance at the all-important sub-£15 price point makes TalkTalk’s new offer hugely compelling, and is likely to cause real disruption to the bigger players.
“The appeal of unlimited of data – despite being ‘only’ 3G – will be integral to the rapid take-up of TalkTalk’s new offering, as mobile users are more data hungry than ever.
“The all-important offering of generous data caps – or none at all – was a key contributor to Virgin Media’s rapid growth as a mobile player. It will no doubt also benefit TalkTalk, although limiting the service to their relatively small existing customer-base is a constricting factor.”
