Commenting on the results of the Premier League rights auction, Richard Neudegg, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com, says: “Sky is clearly determined to retain its crown as the home of sport, after paying a whopping 83% more for Premier League rights in today’s auction, while BT has shelled out 30% more in costs to stay in the game.
“Sky and BT customers will see little difference in the matches they get to see, as both providers will have just a handful more games – however, where they may see a difference is in the monthly cost.
“The providers will need to recover these record-breaking costs from somewhere, and it is usually the consumer that has to stomach these increases. We could see the price of sport packages increase or, alternatively, the cost could be offset into other areas, such as broadband.”
