One month on from iPhone 6 launch and Apple’s lead over Samsung shows no sign of slipping

  • The iPhone 6 remains the UK’s most popular handset after flying straight into the top spot last month

  • Samsung’s poor performance continues, with only three of their handsets making it into the top ten

  • Apple continues to dominate the top three positions with the Samsung Galaxy 5 failing to make an impression

‘Bendgate’ and iOS8 bugs did little to knock Apple’s success last month, with their newest release – the iPhone 6 – going straight in as the UK’s most popular phone. A month on, and this success remains unrivalled. The iPhone 6 is still perched comfortably on the top spot, according to the Uswitch.com Mobile Tracker, which is based on live searches, pre-orders and sales.

While Apple is storming ahead, Samsung is slipping down the charts as its smartphone portfolio craves a much needed revamp. This month the electronics firm announced its weakest quarterly earnings (July-September) for more than three years. With smartphone business accounting for more than half its total sales, the mobile tracker this month is a clear reflection of the Korean manufacturer’s struggle.

In September, Samsung was pushed out of the top three for the first time in a year, and it failed to fight its way back, in October. Only three Samsung handsets now occupy places in the top ten, with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and S4 Mini failing to make the climb back, and the Galaxy S3 knocked off last month’s spot at number ten.

However, there is a glimmer of hope for Samsung thanks to its Galaxy Note 4 phablet, which made a new entry despite only hitting the shops shortly before the end of October. Meanwhile the curious case of the Galaxy Alpha is surprising, as the ‘youth’ phone fails to make an appearance in the top ten at all. Perhaps it will regain its legs when the price tag inevitably drops.

After falling three places last month, the HTC’s flagship device and iPhone 6 competitor, the One M8, has risen one place. As the only device to rise up the charts this month, other than Apple, HTC is the only one celebrating success.

Number one handset – Apple’s newest release, the iPhone 6, retains its top spot for the second month after its release

Biggest winner – HTC’s One M8 is the only device to have risen up the charts this month, after falling three places in September.

Biggest losers – the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, S3, and S4 Mini have failed to re-claim spots in the top ten

Rob Kerr, mobiles expert at Uswitch.com, says: “Thanks to the usual hype surrounding any Apple launch, its victory in the September charts wasn’t surprising. The real test was whether it would remain unchallenged in October – which it has done, and with some style.

“The news of Samsung’s dramatic drop in profits has not gone unnoticed in the Uswitch.com Mobile Tracker. As Apple’s main competitor, the Korean giant is slipping behind, providing a great opportunity for its arch rival.

“What will also be interesting is how LG capitalises on Samsung’s weakness. On announcement of their disappointing quarterly results, their fellow South Korean competitor was all too happy to mock its rivals on twitter. With the LG G3 sandwiched between two Samsung devices in the charts, Samsung may have to watch out for rivalry in its own back-yard.

“Next month could throw a few surprises into the chart. The appearance of the Galaxy Note 4 in the top ten makes it the one to watch for next month, while the start of the Christmas shopping season could see a welcome boost for some of the older models on the market.”
