Commenting on the Ofcom mobile broadband report published today, Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com, says: “Ofcom’s latest report shows that 4G speeds are undoubtedly improving, but with the chosen test locations in key urban centres, it’s not a real representation of the UK as a whole. The true picture for those based outside of major towns and cities – where it is often needed most – is still uncertain.
“There’s significant disparity in speeds across the four main providers, but with EE’s considerable head start, it is unsurprising that it has such headroom – and with the recent launch of 4G+ this is set to continue.
“Mobile operators have indicated that they intend to match O2’s 98% indoor coverage obligation for 4G mobile services by 2015 – including mobile broadband coverage into many areas still under served by 3G – which should help to level the playing field between providers.
“It’s clear that 4G has finally taken off, with uptake skyrocketing to around six million subscriptions in the past year, and speeds consistently faster than those still on 3G. However, with 28% of mobile users limiting their usage due to data caps, consumers aren’t necessarily enjoying the full benefits of a super-fast network.
“When it comes to picking a package, it’s important for consumers to consider their usage habits and needs, as well as ensuring reception is great where they live, work and socialise. Entering the exciting world of 4G undoubtedly means you will use more data, so to avoid a hefty bill at the end of the month, make sure you go for a package with a sufficient buffer in case your usage skyrockets.”
