Commenting on the new wave of retailers accepting Zapp mobile payments, David Mann, Head of Money at Uswitch.com, says: “Until now, paying with your smartphone had seemed like the stuff of sci-fi movies. Major retailers are now starting to adopt this technology on a mass scale and it’s finally becoming a reality. This will mean being able to pay for everything from holidays, electrical goods and utility bills using your own bank account or credit card via your mobile phone. But this won’t be for everybody and it’s important that retailers continue to give consumers choice when it comes to ways to pay – whether through a smartphone, a piece of plastic or even good old fashioned cash.
“There are still concerns over security and privacy to be overcome so Zapp will have to work hard to earn our trust. The use of ‘digital tokens’, which means consumers don’t need to reveal any of their details to merchants, goes some way to securing this trust. Any new technology must offer the same level of protection as credit and debit cards, which give consumers peace of mind when paying.
“With Apple Pay also due to launch in the UK in 2015, it looks like mobile payments are finally about to hit the big time. As with credit cards, I predict that we will end up with a handful of trusted mobile payment brands, the likes of Zapp, PayPal or Apple Pay.”
