Not only will it share the perks of home phone bundles with your mobile in the form of free minutes, but thousands of smartphone users could also avoid being burnt for using their phone abroad.
“The app, which will allow smartphone users to phone the UK from any wi-fi hotspot in the world for free, could help holidaymakers to avoid often horrendous roaming charges and lead to the end of bill shock.
“And for those Virgin Media customers who enjoy unlimited calls as part of their home phone package, the monthly savings could be substantial. Tapping into your landline call allowance from your mobile will mean that those free minutes won’t go to waste simply because you’re not at home to make the most of them. It’s a smart move from Virgin that you don’t have to be a mobile customer to benefit from this.
“The one issue is that the SmartCall app does rely on finding a Wi-Fi connection, which means smartphone users won’t be able to take advantage of their landline minutes wherever they are. But being able to enjoy free calls to those back home when you’re on holiday, could make up for this inconvenience.”
