Following the launch of John Lewis’s six months free home broadband offer when you buy a connected device, such as a tablet, Marie-Louise Abretti, broadband expert at Uswitch.com, says: “This offer is a nod to the growing popularity of tablets and the changing way in which we’re accessing the internet. It seems a good way to tie in the essential broadband connection with a device, especially considering the great protection customers get from buying gadgets from John Lewis.

“But there is no such thing as a free lunch. While customers will get free broadband for six months, the price they’ll have to pay for the remaining six months is more than the cheapest deals on the market. £11 per month for a download limit of 20GB isn’t a very competitive price. And consumers can package their tablet with 3G broadband deals with other providers, such as Three, to enjoy internet on the go.

“But John Lewis isn’t about offering budget broadband. It’s a trusted and longstanding British brand known for quality, value for money and good old-fashioned customer service. And if you’re buying your gadget from the department store to benefit from its five year warranty anyway, signing up to broadband may not be such a leap.”
