Commenting on Sky and Virgin Media’s £49m fibre deal, Marie Louise Abretti, broadband expert at Uswitch.com, says: “This could prove to be a match-winning deal by two telecoms giants. A Sky and Virgin Media partnership will give customers the perfect combination of great TV coupled with a better broadband service. It is a clear challenge to BT’s ‘free’ sports offering, and shows that the other providers are prepared to put up a fight.

“The deal displays a clear understanding of how people now consume entertainment and the fact that they demand what they want, when they want it. It’s also a sensible bit of forward thinking, allowing Sky to meet its customers’ ever-growing demand to stream programmes on sites like BBC iPlayer and Netflix at peak early evening times. Sky are clearly trying to ensure that its broadband infrastructure can keep up – and many will breathe a sigh of relief that they won’t be seeing the dreaded buffer wheel.

“However, Sky customers frustrated with slow speeds won’t necessarily be celebrating as a result of this move – it won’t automatically put them in the fast lane.”
