British Gas EV tariffs

With more energy providers offering specific EV tariffs for those wanting to charge their vehicles at home, it’s no surprise that British Gas has developed its own option for customers to sign up to.

How many British Gas EV tariffs are there?

British Gas only has one EV tariff at the time of writing, but it could be an ideal option for EV owners around the country.

How does British Gas’s EV tariff work?

British Gas's EV tariff is relatively straightforward compared to other options available.

Customers can access a super-low off-peak electricity rate between 12am and 5am every day, with the daytime rate kept as close as possible to a normal tariff's daytime rate (though it will be a bit higher to balance costs).

You can sign up whether you’re an existing British Gas customer or not - just get in touch with the customer service team to get started.

How much does the British Gas EV tariff cost?

The cheaper night-time rate for this tariff is 7.9p per kWh, but as mentioned, the daytime rate will be higher than it would be on a normal fixed tariff in order to balance out the costs for the supplier.

It’s important to calculate what you’re likely to use and when you’re likely to use it so you can estimate your monthly, quarterly and annual payments as accurately as possible. British Gas estimates that 33% of your energy use will be during the off-peak hours.

Can I take British Gas’s EV tariff with me if I move house?

You won’t be able to take the tariff with you if you move because it’s tied to your smart meter, which in turn is tied to your address, so you don’t take it with you when you move. You’d have to sign up again when you’ve moved into your new property (as long as you’re still eligible to do so).

What else do I need to know about British Gas’s EV tariff?

In order to sign up to the EV tariff, you’ll need the following:

  • A smart meter so the supplier can accurately charge you for your electricity usage at off-peak and peak hours
  • You’ll need to pay via Direct Debit and manage your account online
  • You may need to prove that you’re charging an EV at home.
